Frequently asked Q&A continued

1/ Dear Dr. Poole. I have been considering having eyelid surgery for a while but recently a friend of mine has had a forehead and brow lift and her eyes do look considerably better. Which do you think is best? Many thanks in advance.

Well, this is a very interesting question as both are good anti-aging procedures and sometimes not even surgeons seem to be able to give the right advice. In general, as we get older and specially after the age of 50, the corners of the eyes drop making the eyes look sad. Eventually wrinkles or bags (or both) may develop on the lower lids so we begin to look tired as well. In some cases, the upper lids form a fold over the eyelashes to the point that the eyes look much smaller. At the same time in some people and mainly because of expression, the skin of the forehead becomes loose causing horizontal and vertical lines and the eyebrows to fall. It is all about common sense; although both techniques are complementary, most patients will benefit more with only one of them. When the problem is fatty pads or bags or loose skin on both upper and lower lids, the blepharoplasty is the right choice, but when the forehead is wrinkled and the eyebrows have dropped, the best results come with the forehead lift, that not only will elevate both brows making the eyes look bigger, but will also get rid of the forehead lines and the ones formed on the outer corners of the eyes. The cost of both procedures is the same and you may ask at any time for a free consultation to asses which one would suit you best.

2/ Dear Dr Poole, I have always felt rather conscious about my ears which tend to stick out a lot. It is even more noticeable now that I live in Spain because of having a shorter hairstyle. I know that lots of kids have operations

to pin back their ears, but am I too late? I am a 38 year old woman.

The correction of the ear shape is called otoplasty and it can be done at any age. It is much more common in children as we are aware how difficult it can be for these children at school, so we advise an early correction usually at the age of 8 to 12, but really there is not an age limit. It is also a day surgery procedure usually carried out with only local anaesthesia plus sedation that takes about one hour. The recovery period is short but it is advised to wear some sort of hair band for a month until the cartilage assumes its new shape. It leaves no visible scars and the results are permanent.

3/ Dear Dr. Poole I am a 45 year old woman, I breast fed my two children and now I see that my breasts have become smaller and saggy.
