be built and tested.
Enter the new location, in East Rutherford, NJ with 8000 sq. feet. It is a wonder Steve managed to keep all of his hair! He had to move the entire business in the least amount of time, and he had to avoid disruption to the business flow and activities. Steve was also managing the sale and purchase of his living situation. Having his main home at Huntingham Beach, California, Steve had purchased real estate for the time he would spend in NJ.
Improving the density of space in the warehouse was something that occupied Steve prior to the move. It had been worked out that at Secaucus there was around 5,500 sq. feet, which consisted of wasted honey, combed gaps. One product would fill the storage racking density next to others that left huge unused spaces. After a few ideas got tossed out such as narrow isles utilising specially designed forklifts, JRC decided that the best option, that delivered the best efficiency would be a stacked horizontal carrousel system. Watching back the time-lapse film Steve took of the installation was amazing. Before the warehouse at Rutherford could be laid out the carrousel needed to
The set up that was chosen consisted of 28-inch wide shelving, stacked 12 feet high with bin space for products. But JRC didn’t just go for the one; they chose to have two tracks side by side. The idea is that the 28 by 12 would rotate along the tracks with bins that could carry up to 3500 items. By doing this it allowed JRC to take 5500 sq. ft. of space and shrink this down to about 1000 sq. ft.
Why didn’t JRC just get a smaller pad, I hear you say? Well, forward-looking JRC reduced its warehouse footprint in order to free up space for growth. Start as you mean to set off, me thinks and a good demonstration of real thought into future business projection.
So, what other advantages does the system have for JRC?
Steve says, “Have you ever visited a laundry place to pick up your suit? You give your ticket in at the counter and then they press a button, this then swings all the finished garments on a carrousel. This, of course, brings your suit to the front. You pay, you
