for JRC New
warehouse tech & move
A few weeks ago, my cell phone rang. I could tell instantly it was Steve Blyth of J Racenstein, because it said ‘Steve’ in the display panel, go figure.
J Racenstein as a company is one of the oldest and largest window cleaning Supply Companies in the US with two main branches in New Jersey and California. A strategic sprinkling of sales people fill the gaps encompassing a large spread of the country on top of its international sales.
JRC is a ‘people’ company, doing business with old school logic of meeting and greeting the customers in their place of business, but also being one of the most switched on technology wise. These guys have the full package, and with a killer, well-known established brand that is over 100 years old, JRC stay ahead of the field.
I have hung out with Steve Blyth many times, he is a great host and I love the ‘family’ feel and care that he shows not just to me, but also to everyone he meets, whether that be a customer, supplier or staff member. He has that quality in business that is seldom shown - the quality of making everyone happy and dishing out that feeling of everyone getting a fair slice of a deal or fair solution to any problematic situation.
It sounded like ‘John Wayne’ was on the phone, when I answered. (Steve does a very good impression.) “Hey, Lee. How’s it going?” “I’m good Steve. What’s up man?”
“Can you pop over and see me? I will email your
flights. Two days of fun, and then two days of work.” Steve said. Crap! I thought, how tough is this work going to be for Steve to front up two days of fun??
Steve went on to say that he had Unger coming in and that we needed to film their latest product for WCM TV; however, the excitement showed in his voice when he began to talk about his new order picking system over at the NJ depot, Oh! And then he mentioned that JRC had moved premises.
The premises in Secaucus NJ had been creaking at the seams for sometime with 7,500 sq. feet. With JRC’s expansion in product lines, it seemed inevitable that at some point additional floor space would be required or a novel solution of compacting the warehouse was needed. The other disadvantage of Secaucus was having the sales team on an upper floor and the warehouse on the ground floor. Steve felt that his staff’s fluidity would be best served all on one level.
