Achieve Success in 2016

Avoid complacency and a career rut BY PAULA COMFORT

Y

ou will always get more out of life professionally and per- sonally when you have solid career goals. So reach out,

network, research and dig deep. Determine what will fulfill you in the short and long term. Here are some ideas to help you set your goals.

1. Improve your current performance metrics All roles and positions have perfor-

mance metrics in our industry, and your performance ties directly to the financial performance of your club. Performance measures can include ser- vice, new member integration statistics and cleanliness of the club. Get feed- back and understand what you can do to improve your current performance and your impact on your club.

2. Promotions What is the next step in your career

based on your current role? A great time to have this conversation with your boss is at the end of your perfor- mance appraisal. This is the time to communicate your goals and to de- velop a timeline and plan. You should have both a short term and longer term goal. Where do you see yourself in five years?

3. Enhance your current skills Ideally you are aware of your

shortcomings, and hopefully these are not career limiting. Do something to develop these weaker skills. For ex- ample, take a course outside of your company, work with a mentor or take an additional certification and elevate your skills. There can be a big payoff here!

4. Be an entrepreneur in your company Join a committee or task force, or

better yet start one. Look for oppor- tunities to lead, grow and shine and to network with leaders within your company.

5. Keep your resume updated You never know when another op-

portunity will come your way. Keep abreast of other companies and oppor- tunities that might surface. Reviewing your resume may make you realize the gaps in your skills, experience and performance.

6.

Interview for other roles There is no better way to ensure

you have career goals than to inter- view for roles with other companies. Prepare and plan by reflecting on and revisiting your past performance. Presentation skills and professionalism are key in this process. Regardless of the outcome, you will learn and grow immensely from this experience. You will also learn about other companies, cultures and opportunities.
