Wow - Fall Fair season is here! Hope those Fairs that have

From the Executive Director

already finished had a great run and GOOD LUCK to those of you that are in your final planning stages! We know what a busy time this is for you! It was a great summer for the Federation – we had a fantastic

Summer Workshop in Brandon/Tampa hosted by the Greater Hillsborough County Fair and Florida State Fair. The staff and board of these two Fairs definitely rolled out the red carpet to make it a memorable event! If you haven’t been to Summer Workshop you should think about it for next year. It is a chance to really get to meet and talk to people from other Fairs in a very relaxed, informal atmosphere. We also had another great Fair trip – Fair Trip 2015! Be sure to

read the article on the Fair Trip in this issue! This year’s Annual Directory has been published and distribut-

ed. A special thanks to Doris Graska, Newsletter Chairman and a past Federation President– she spent a tremendous amount of time editing the Directory. Thanks also to Rita DeMier and An- drea Simeone with the South Florida Fair for doing the layout for the cover with this year’s Photo Contest winners and to Bill Ol- son with the Greater Jacksonville Ag Fair for printing the mem- bership cards. The Directory wouldn’t have happened without help from all of them!

Be sure to mark your calendars for

the 2016 Convention – May 12 – 14th in St. Augustine! We will again be at the Renaissance Resort at the World Golf Village this year - it is a beautiful facility and a great location for the convention. The Golf Tournament will be

AWESOME as well - you won’t want to miss it – May 11th! If there is anything I can do for

you – please don’t hesitate to give me a call and thanks again for all your support! Don’t forget –YOU are the Federation and our organization is here to serve you!

Sincerely Lisa Hinton, CFE, Executive Director

Attorney’s Corner “Additional Powers of Fairs” As many of you are aware, Chapter 616, which governs public

fairs and expositions, was reviewed and modified several years ago by the Florida Legislature. Within the Chapter there is a sec- tion which lists additional powers of a fair association. It is inter- esting to note the Florida Legislature has empowered fair associ- ations to do more than just hold an annual fair. It’s worth a read- ing again if you have not reviewed Section 616.08 in a while. Specifically it provides: Each fair association shall hold, conduct, and operate public

fairs and expositions, including an annual public fair. For that purpose, a fair association may buy, lease, acquire, and occupy lands and erect buildings and improvements of any kind on those lands; sell, mortgage, lease, license, or convey any such property or any part thereof, in its discretion, from time to time for the purpose of public fairs or expositions; charge and receive com- pensation for admission to those public fairs and expositions, and grant a lease or license or rent space for exhibits, concessions, and other purposes; conduct and hold public meetings; supervise and conduct lectures and demonstration work in connection with or for the improvement of agriculture, horticulture, stock raising and poultry raising, and all kinds of farming and related matters; hold exhibits of agricultural and horticultural products and live- stock, poultry, equine, and other domestic animals; give certifi- cates or diplomas of excellence; promote the progress of the geo- graphical area it represents and serves and stimulate public inter- est in the advantages and development of that area by providing facilities for the benefit and development of the educational, agri- cultural, horticultural, livestock, equestrian, charitable, historical, civic, cultural, scientific, and other resources of the state, any county of the state, or any municipality or other community of any county of the state, including facilities for exhibits, conces- sions, industrial exhibitions, public gatherings, cultural activities, entertainment events, recreational vehicle parking, auctions, trade shows, concerts, and other functions that the association deter- mines will enhance the educational, physical, economic, and cul- tural interests of the public; and generally do, perform, and carry
