Sept. 26 is officially Dr. Dumas

Day in Citrus County. Recently community members of all ages whose lives have been influenced by Dumas gathered to watch the presentation of a sign that desig- nates Independence Highway as Dr. Ronald Dumas Highway. Mr. and Mrs. Dumas have been a big part of the 4-H and FFA for years. Fair Association President Lee Earl Stokes expressed the community’s gratitude for Dumas’ years of contri- butions and hard work, saying, “For the dedication that he has shown the Citrus County Fair Association, and all the kids throughout the years in 4-H and FFA, and all that he has done for them, and all that he has taught them, and the way he has guided them—Doobie, thank you.” Dr. Dumas has served on the Citrus County Fair Board since 1969. Dumas was born and raised in Citrus County and began practicing

veterinary medicine in 1964, at the age 28. The following year the coun- ty extension agent asked if he would help out with farm animals in the community.

He has cared for many children’s animals free of charge. He

has been a County Commissioner, a member of Kiwanis and an Air Force Reserve Colonel. Dr. Dumas’ legacy continues in the form of annual scholarships.
