FACT WHATYOU

SHOULDEXPECT

YOUR BABY’S FINGERS, TOES, EARS AND EYELIDS ARE FORMED AND SHE NOW MOVES ABOUT

The first twelve weeks of pregnancy are by far the most important in terms of baby’s development. All your baby’s organs and systems are being formed. So if you are feeling tired and nauseous, remember that you are growing a new being. Eat a healthy diet, and don’t take any medications

before permission from your doctor.

“You can try over the counter sulphur based products provided you do not have a sulphur allergy, or you can use a topical product containing alpha hydroxy acids or glycolic acids. If these do not help, then topical prescription creams such as azelaic acid or erythromycin cream are indicated – both are safe to use during pregnancy,” Dr Moolla advises.

“You should not use any of the retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid containing creams and cleansers. They are not safe in pregnancy,” cautions Dr Moolla. “Oral antibiotics for acne in pregnancy are not advised. However, if the acne is making you miserable, then

oral erythromycin is a safe option, but is available only on prescription,” she advises. Also consider switching to a foundation for oily skin, and try using loose powder mineral make-up, suggests Dr Moolla. These may be useful as they won’t irritate the skin and they both have oil blotting properties. You can also try using blotting paper to remove excess oil during the day.

SO VERY ITCHY

“Harmless all over itchiness is common in pregnancy. A good moisturiser is all that is needed to soothe the skin,” says Dr Moolla. However, potentially serious rashes do occur in pregnancy, such

OTHER SURPRISES

WHAT OTHER SURPRISES DOES PREGNANCY HAVE IN STORE FOR YOUR SKIN? Skin tags may increase during pregnancy, moles may change colour slightly and scars may become more noticeable during pregnancy. This is because of those pesky fluctuating hormones, but they should go away or change back after the pregnancy. You might find that your skin is just more sensitive and fussy overall. Your skin might get red more easily, your favourite fragranced body cream might irritate it and your normal facial might feel much more painful. Try to be extra gentle and skip the exfoliants and body scrubs. Now’s also a good time to re-evaluate the products you use and consider switching to natural, chemical-free formulations. Palmar erythema (redness of the palms), spider angiomas (tiny red blood vessels) and varicose veins may also develop during pregnancy.
