Most women still look pregnant for some time after birth, and getting back into shape takes time. Effort and patience go a long way
T
here are very few women who can genuinely jump straight back into their skinny jeans a few weeks after their baby is born. Even if you kept
fit during the pregnancy, you probably gained some unwanted weight or lost a bit of muscle definition.
Eating well and exercising regularly will give you your body back but you have to be realistic. Give yourself a manageable time frame – it took you nine months to grow that baby, allow at least that much time to return to your pre-pregnancy shape.
Although you should be eating healthily from day one, don’t start working out until your doctor gives you the okay. That should be about six weeks after delivery and it could be longer if you had a caesarean section. Starting a vigorous exercise regime too soon can cause long term damage to your stomach muscles and affect your milk supply if you’re breastfeeding. Until then, go for a 20 to 30 minute stroll with your baby in a pram every day.
