Welcome to the joys of pregnancy. Excessive phlegm as well as excessive saliva is a horrible reality of pregnancy and can make your nausea worse. It can also lead to severe congestion and breathing problems. If the phlegm is green or yellow in colour (this could indicate pus and an infection) or if there is blood, this needs immediate attention. If the phlegm is clear then the following remedies may help, but please consult with your caregiver if you suspect infection and inflammation. HONEY Honey has excellent antibacterial properties and is a well known remedy for coughs. Mix with warm water or rooibos tea and drink on waking.

STEAM INHALATION Place two to three drops of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of hot steaming water (be very careful and ask someone else to prepare this for you). Cover the bowl and your head with a towel and breathe in the vapours. This is a very effective way to relieve congestion and can be done frequently. A few drops of lavender oil added to the mixture will ease feelings of exasperation and depression, which often accompany this sort of niggle. You can also use certain over the counter decongestant drops, so ask your pharmacist which are safe. DRINKING HOT FRESHLY SQUEEZED LEMON WATER may also help.
