land connected with the library site.” The library site is one of more than

200 which have been suggested for housing and employment in the early stages of the borough’s local plan process. Cllr Thornewell was concerned

that many of the areas on the call for sites listwere on greenfield sites. He feared that development could lead to “ the joining up of East andWest Malling” and the loss of valuable countryside “in a sea of houses”. He added: “Clearly some sites, particularly in the built-up areas, will have to be accepted, but we do need some countryside left in the Malling area.” A spokesman forTonbridge and Malling Council said: “The fact that sites have been put forward does not mean they will be allocated for de- velopment. “Peoplemaybe surprised by some

of the sites that have emerged, but there is a long way to go, including some critical technical assessment and then the involvement of local communities in a public consulta- tion in the spring of next year.”

POLICE have pledged a no toler- ance approach to anti-social be- haviour inWest Malling. Following numerous complaints

from members of the public about unpleasant behaviour in the Nor- man Road area, officers are using new powers to disperse groups who they believe contribute to crime and disorder. A 48-hour dispersal order was enforced over a weekend by the community policing team, based at Kings Hill.

The officers issued seven direc-

tion to leave notices to youths who they believed were likely to cause anti-social behaviour in the area. Three section 59 warnings were

also given to moped riders who had been driving in an anti-social manner. These are valid for 12 months, and if the riders or bikes are caught within that time, police can use powers to seize the bikes and report the offenders. Sgt Ashley Boxall said: “I would like to reassure members of the

community thatwe take all reports seriously and would encourage any person witnessing any anti-so- cial behaviour in the area to report it to 101. “If possible, record details of reg- istration plates, descriptions of bikes and persons seen.We will not tolerate such behaviour and every aspect of legislation will be consid- ered against those disrupting the day to day life of others. This may include enforcement against par- ents and tenancies.”
