Shop move leads to bigger plans

TABLEWARE specialist China Chaps has completed its move from Holborough Road, Snodland to the Savoy Snooker Hall in the High Street. Although the main building has

a To Let sign,China Chaps has ap- plied to Tonbridge and Malling Council to subdivide the ground floor retail area into three smaller units and to change the use of the first-floor retail area to two two- bedroom flats and one single bed- room flat. Owner Mickey Perry said: “The request for planning permission might be a more appealing option in the long term for Snodland as there is always a lot of demand for start-up independent shops to open and there just don't seem to be enough single bedroom flats available currently. “We also have a flat that has

been fully refurbished connected to the snooker hall. This was the old manager's flat at 4 High Street. What we have done is provide new access to the flat, stripped out most of the interior and totally re- decorated, including putting in a

new bathroom. “It is now a very nice three-bed-

room flat in central Snodland and is available for £775 a month, so I am looking for a tenant.” China Chaps is using Hicks Es-

tate Agency to let both properties. “Progress has been great,” said Mickey. “I am really happywithwhere we

have ended up and the move of the china shop seems to have worked out well already.” China Chaps' new building was opened as theWardona Cinema in 1938 and closed in 1963. It be- came the Savoy Club before being converted into a snooker hall.

Local news for Snodland and Halling Family party as Grace turns 102

THE town's oldest lady has celebrated her 102nd birthday. Grace Spencer has lived in Ostlers Court, Snodland since 1987. Although she can no longer get out of her house as much as she used to, she still has an incredi- ble sense of hu- mour. "I can't get

about much but I take every day as it comes," she told Town Talk. "I see people a lot younger than me suffering more than I do. It is no good being morbid and I believe in the old adage that the devil looks after his own," she added with a twinkle in her eye. Grace, who had no children, was married to Joseph, who died in

1969. She thanked her niece, Barbara Spencer, and husband Keith, who live in Halling, for looking after her. They held a party for her and Grace is pictured with Chilli, a Staffy

cross, and from left, Alan Kirkaldie, Barbara, her great niece Chasta Kirkaldie and Keith.
