family established their distillery in the capital city of Haiti, Port-au- Prince. We know Haiti from the news. Former dictator, Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, reduced this land of tropical bounty to penury. When Haiti was devastated by an earthquake five years ago, much of the already crumbing infrastructure collapsed leaving more than one hundred thousand dead and many more homeless. Countless news reports detailing disease and destruction had prepared me for the
worst on my visit to Barbancourt. Yes, poverty still remains;
however, those reports seem oblivious of the genuinely good people of Port-au-Prince: the school kids in clean, crisply pressed uniforms, the cultural richesse. I’m told that the groomed tourist resorts of the Haitian seaside are a bargain if you want to tan, eat and be pampered. How glad I was that rum had steered me into the teeming city
