and had a light snack, Brian and I decided to go back to the Double Brook and give it a try for a couple of hours before dinner. Brian had his fly rod and I had a spinning reel on a nine-foot fly rod to cast a blue and silver little Cleo. I stood and cast just ahead of the start of the rapids,

and this was probably the best fishing of my life. In eight casts, I caught six speckles between two and three pounds, and the fight in this fast water was something to behold. Not to be outdone, Brian caught another six fish on

the fly, and our day was complete. After a fabulous dinner of speckle trout a la Rick

Adams, which included salt beef, onion soup mix, potatoes, turnip and carrot (and I am sure some other things), Brian and I went out and trolled around the few islands near the camp. We got a few bites, but the wind came up and blew us off the lake. The next morning we had to get ready to fly back

to Springdale with a ton of memories and a whole lot of pictures. The fishing trip the four of us took was everything we dreamed of and more, and the fact that I had been there before just added to my memories. If you are ever thinking about fishing the great brook

trout of Labrador, don’t hesitate to find an outfitter and make your plans to have perhaps the best outdoor experience you will ever find.

TREE PLANTING continued from page 33

with the placement of a culvert between both bodies of water through which oxygenated water can now flow, and fish can now pass. By December 2014, the majority of the construction to

replace the pond’s substrate material with new sand, gravel or organic material was completed. Heavy equipment was also used for the placement of tree stumps, logs and branches, some of which protrude into the pond from the shore. Root wads were installed directly into the pond to provide structural support and to promote fish and aquatic insect habitat. Root wads include the root mass or ball of the tree plus a portion of its trunk. They are inverted and then pushed into the pond’s substrate material. After this work was completed, the pond was refilled

and lay ready for the spring community tree planting activities last spring. Now that the restoration project is complete, it will be

supported by fish tagging and monitoring to measure the success of the approach to wetlands habitat restoration and improvement. The project website says: “It is now up to Mother

Nature to let things take their course and let the pond and shoreline flourish and grow.” (http://rvca.ca/brewerpark/ index.html)
