road to the top at 9:15 a.m. and discovered that it didn’t open till 9:30 a.m. We relaxed for few minutes and took in the scenery until the gate opened, paid the $11 each and off we went. The road was newly paved last

year and it was a joy to drive on. The ride up was spectacular. At the summit we were greeted by one of the Whiteface staff. He explained what there was available and how best to enjoy the sights. The day was bright and clear,

without wind, and we could see more than 60 miles in all directions. We were directed into a tunnel and made our way to an elevator shaft that is cut through the rock and goes more than 200 feet up to the very top of the mountain. What a view! You had to be there. Going down was a breeze. We

put the bikes into second gear and hardly had to touch the brakes. The trick was watching the road instead of the view. It was time to go home, so we

went back through Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, then meandered to Ogdensburg and over the bridge. Well, we didn’t get the big ride

in but because of our schedules we figured we might not be able to get five days for awhile. However, three mountains in three days was not too shabby! Next up: afternoon jaunts

around The Valley. And that ain’t that bad… eh? Gidday for now!
