HEALTH continued from page 8

a few days without a run. When we had the unbearable hot spell last July, I didn’t run at all. I took to the stairs, did more calisthenics and light weights, in fact anything to tell my body it was still alive. If only I could apply that self- discipline to food. Sometimes I don’t understand

me. I do want to lose the weight, but can’t seem to muster the habit-forming approach needed. I’m not a total loss, either. Heck,

I spent two weeks sitting in front of a youtube video of a rather clumsy guitar teacher learning an instrumental version of “Hallelujah.” I finally learned the arrangement, finger-picking at such a slow rate that even Leonard Cohen might find it unrecognizable. That experience suggests a 1960

study might have been correct. It claimed a new habit could be formed in 21 days. This makes me wonder if I should

take another crack at losing those pounds. But my self-discipline will waiver if those darn cookies and chips are in the house. Yes. I’m weak.
