Paul Lake. His was the only one on this section of water, and because of the strong winds, we had to fly into the back of the island and lug our gear to the other side. But we had lots of time, because Rick was on his way back to Springdale to pick up Wib and Gloria and the rest of the gear. Once everyone was in and settled,
it was time to do a little fishing before supper. Paul Lake is the start of three river
systems in Labrador: the St. Paul, the Alex and the Paradise river systems. There are about 60 to 80 miles of shoreline on the lake, and the average depth is 12 feet. Yes, that’s right. Twelve feet.
We would be using a little wider
than normal canoes with 2 HP motors. All the motors have prop guards on them because of the shallow water; and believe me, if you didn’t have these guards on, you would need a large supply of props and shear pins. Rick took Wib and me in two canoes
down to a place called Double Brook, and on the way there he dropped Bill and Brian off at another spot on the system. Rick had told us the week before the fishing was the best he had seen in a long time, and he was right. We were only going for a couple
hours, so Wib and I really didn’t dress for the occasion. We wore running shoes and sweats when we really should have worn chest waders. We fished at the top of the brook and managed to hook into
