The ecological benefits include: • •
the reconnection of the pond to the Rideau River to allow access between both bodies of water to various aquatic species
the creation of new functional spawning, nursery and feeding grounds for the Rideau River fish population, including those for muskellunge and northern pike

the provision of new winter and summer refuge areas for fish
improved environmental conditions for other wetland species such as amphibians, turtles and small mammals
the creation of a more suitable and sustainable environment for diverse underwater and surficial aquatic vegetation, upon which wetland species depend for their well-being.
The social benefits include: •
increased community awareness about the social benefits and opportunities associated with an ecologically healthy and sustainable Lower Rideau River watershed
• no-fee access to an environmentally-divergent urban park
•
improved angling opportunities within urban Ottawa
• awareness that community associations, educational
institutions and local Non- Government Organizations
(NGOs) can plan and success- fully team together to complete similar restoration projects within a diverse community setting.
The conceptual planning,
design and implementation of the project started in 2012. The actual reconstruction began in Oct., 2014. The pond was emptied and heavy equipment was moved in to transform it and then reconnect it to the Rideau River. This was achieved
