Likhubula Floods Appeal Update


Our recent appeal to help the community deal with the devastation from the fl oods that aff ected all of southern Malawi raised close to £8000.


The situation there however remains serious with the continuing lack of food and shelter. Our assessment suggests that this is likely to continue for the next year and so we have been reviewing with the local community and our wider Malawian contacts how best we can continue to provide further support through this very diffi cult time.


Feedback from the community clearly indicated that in addition to the shortage of food there was a need to deal with the destruction of a large number of houses in the Likhubula villages. Local housing was entirely destroyed in the fl ooding.


Fortunately the Scotland Malawi Partnership was gifted £20000 from the Beit Trust who set up a “Flood Recovery Mini Grant” scheme inviting applications for project funding. Our proposal to rebuild some of the destroyed housing was accepted and
