The Spice of Life – Chilli


Used to enhance and fl avour many dishes, chilli powder is derived either from one or more varieties of chilli pepper, dried and ground, or a chilli powder can be blended with other spices including oregano, garlic powder, cumin and salt. Because of the types of chillies used and/or the various potential added ingredients, the spiciness of any chilli powder is variable but it’s certain that red chilli powder is capable of setting your tongue alight, your ears buzzing and even upsetting your stomach!


Used wisely, it will add a wonderful ‘bite’ to many dishes, including tomato-based sauces; used as a marinade or popped into casseroles and other pot-dishes.


Chilli powder has a long shelf life as long as it is stored away from light and heat and is in an airtight container. You can keep it fresh this way for up to two years.


Red chillies are very rich in Vitamin C and provitamin A.


Commonly used in: Bean-based stews, curry, fajitas chocolate & sprinkled onto salad
