Don’t worry, we’re not going off on a Shakespearean tangent, but something with the same sentiment. We get asked all the time “do you use original manufacturers spare parts, or do you use non-original”? It’s a reasonable and fair question so let’s explain a few things.
If for example you have a Ford Focus and we need to replace a part, we can either get that part from Ford (through their parts network), or we can get it from an after-market supplier such as AC Delco or Valeo. In fairness, there’s also a growing flood of much cheaper spare parts coming from China.
It would be easy to categorise spare parts by quality or price, but it really isn’t that easy. Some third party suppliers actually supply the same part to the original manufacturers. So we could buy the same part from either, the only difference being the brand on the label and the price. Conversely, some third party manufacturers ‘copy’ the originals, use inferior materials and will cost somewhat less. The price reflects the quality. In this case, it’s super easy to make a choice: do you want a quality part, or do you want a cheap part. And make no mistake, some (and we emphasise the word ‘some’) cheap parts will fail far sooner than original parts and can cause consequential problems.
One other aspect that is often overlooked, is delivery time. The likes of Ford, Opel, Nissan, Renault, etc have a well oiled (please forgive the pun) supply network and we can get parts, often the same day. With third parties, that’s not always the case. It’s one reason why original parts can seem more expensive. Another aspect is guarantees. Ford offers an airtight guarantee, others may not!
So what do we advise. Well, unlike others, we always offer you, the customer, the choice. We’ll tell you the options and then you can make an informed decision. What we won’t do is recommend parts we feel may compromise safety. And if you say to us “do what you feel is best”, of course we’ll give you our very best opinion and what we believe is right for you!
