Aquaculture Europe 2015 – Darling Ingredients
Feed footprint
Using animal by-products is a sustainable way to keep costs low, says Dutch fi rm Sonac
A
strong vision to provide sustainable products and to maximise value while minimising their carbon footprint has driven Sonac’s high quality products.
A brand of Darling Ingredients Incorporated, Sonac adopts their values of being innovati ve, renewable and sustainable. The company pride themselves on their slogan: Improvement by nature. Sonac processes raw materials that have come from animal origin and turned them into essenti al ingredients for fi sh such as fats, proteins and minerals. A global demand for farmed fi sh is on the
increase and one of the greatest challenges for fi sh farmers is sustainability. With prices of fi sh feed getti ng higher, farmers are looking for innovati ve ways to keep their costs low. The approval to reintroduce animal materials
derived raw into aqua feed in Europe came around in 2005. Since then, the sales volume of the animal origin raw materials has grad- ually increased and, since 2013, also poultry meal and feather meal has been allowed to be used in EU aqua feed. With soaring market prices for fi shmeal and fi sh oil, Sonac have seen

poultry meal and poultry oil as an innovati ve and sustainable way to keep costs low. There is increasing communicati on between aqua feed producers regarding sustainability, and this sup- ports future planning of company targets. Geert Van Der Velden, sales manager for Sonac, said: ‘With respect to the European situati on, as it is my personal biggest interest, Sonac has been working with the European government to reintroduce animal by-prod- ucts into aqua feeds. We have been heavily involved with their reintroducti on, because it is of great importance that the aqua feed industry is sustainable. We are working with the EU authoriti es to make the reintroducti on a success and have also adapted our producti on lines to meet EU legislati on with regards to the aqua feed industry.’ Animal fats are a major energy source and
are the most sustainable fat source available. Traditi onally, fi sh oil has been used as the main lipid source for aquaculture feeds because of its high unsaturated fatt y acid content, but recently market forces have led to signifi cant increases in prices, and the price of fi sh oil has more than

quadrupled over the past 10 years, leading to a ti ghtening of the supply. Sonac recommends the use of poultry oil, because of the fatt y acid profi le for use in aqua feed. Various trials have been run and (parti al substati on) proved sustainable. Sonac’s poultry oils have been thoroughly test- ed in trials with EU aqua feed producers who own their own research farms. Tests that were run partly replaced fi sh, soya and rapeseed oil with poultry oil. It is also common in areas such as South America to use poultry oil rather than rapeseed oil or soya oil as fi sh feed. The by-products that humans don’t consume
are collected daily from slaughterhouses and brought to Sonac’s processing plants. The pro- teins and fats are separated and handled in a
