Flat pack fish farm

strategy for the tank dimensions, we calculated that approximately 1.4 tonnes of abalone could be harvested aft er four years. This esti mate is on the basis that abalone are bought as seed and grown in a single prototype RAS unit with a stocking and grading frequency of six months. Aft er 12 months, the abalone are then placed into four replica systems to grow to market size.

Approximately, what are the costs involved in setti ng up an AquaFarm? Our prototype system cost a fracti on of commercially available systems to

develop, and included full equipment and materials, with no economies of scale. We esti mate that an experienced manufacturer in this area could pro- duce the AquaFarm system very competi ti vely but this is dependent on their choice of manufacturing methods, materials and existi ng capacity. Considering the retail cost of some commercially available RASs are quoted

in millions of Euros, we see a huge gap in the market for AquaFarm, especial- ly for those looking to enter the market with minimal capital requirements.

To what extent has the system been tested? Having designed detailed schemati cs and developed a full scale RAS pro-

totype, we have been able to prove and demonstrate the product concept through a series of experimental fi eld trials. The system has been fully tested and opti mised for the culti vati on of abalone.

Have you had any interest from potenti al commercial partners? We have att racted interest from a range of companies involved in aqua-

culture, engineering and related industries, both in Ireland and globally. We have been contacted by companies in Europe, the US and Asia interested in licensing and developing the product. In additi on, we have received enquiries from potenti al end users simply expressing their interest in purchasing Aqua- Farm once it’s been commercialised.

How long before the fi rst commercial AquaFarm? Given the interest this technology has received to date, we’re quietly confi -

dent we will fi nd the right commercial partner to bring AquaFarm to market in the very near future. FF
