Importance of knowledge transfer in aquaculture

heFishSite has always prided itself on providing cutti ng edge news and technical informati on for the aquaculture industry, and this industry knowledge transfer is
also off ered via its range of Sustainable Aqua- culture courses. Delivered in partnership with the University of St Andrews, the courses are off ered 100 per cent online and are suitable for entry level students and those wanti ng to study at higher postgraduate level. More recently, TheFishSite has also been
off ering webinars to expand their off er of improving knowledge within the aquaculture industry. So far this year the webinars have covered
topics from sustainability and fi sh welfare to parasiti c infecti ons in aquaculture presented by eminent hosts who are experts in their respecti ve fi elds. In June, Dr Matt Longshaw presented on para-
siti c infecti ons in aquaculture. Dr Longshaw is a product development manager for Benchmark Animal Health Ltd (BAHL). Prior to joining BAHL, he worked as a senior
research scienti st for more than 20 years for the Briti sh government where he headed up the Populati on Health and Welfare team. With an honours degree in Biological Sciences (Marine and Fish Biology), a Mas- ters in Marine and Fisheries Science and a PhD in Aquati c Parasitology, Dr Longshaw has an excellent knowledge of parasiti c infecti ons in wild and farmed aquati c species with a parti cular interest in diseases of shellfi sh. He has also published extensively and is an elected fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and of the Royal Society of Biology. During the webinar Dr Longshaw briefl y discussed the history of aquaculture and fi sh farming before expounding on a range of parasiti c groups. Dr Longshaw spoke about the link between parasites and dis- ease, the importance of disease control in aquaculture and the range of diagnosti c methods. Menti oning, among others, Mikrocytos, ciliates, Cercozoa, Myxozoa and Monogenea, Dr Longshaw gave listeners an overview of each parasiti c group, their lifestyles and their impact. Speaking aft erwards about the importance of knowledge transfer within the aquaculture industry Dr Longshaw said: ‘It is crucial that all parts of the industry, whether that is government, farmers, academics, private veterinary companies, feed or pharmaceuti cal companies, are able to talk to each other with a common language. ‘Part of that comes from training opportuniti es like this where we can
show examples of the range of parasites found in farmed aquati c ani- mals. By entering into a dialogue it allows us all to work together to solve problems that the industry faces. ‘I hope that talks like this also enthuse people to look more closely at the animals under their care and to encourage others to move into the exciti ng world of aquati c disease.’ The topic of the next webinar will be parasites in focus and will conti nue
from where Dr Longshaw’s webinar left off . It will be the fi rst in a two-part series and will take a closer look at some
notable parasiti c infecti ons of farmed aquati c organisms. Using named examples, the talk will examine a variety of protozoan and metazoan parasites on some of the world’s principal farmed fi sh, crustacean and molluscan species and make comments on their detecti on, identi fi cati on, impacts on their host, and strategies for their management and control. parasites in focus. Dr Shinn has a degree in Biological Sciences (Zoology) and a PhD in Vet- erinary Aquaculture. He has 26 years’ experience in aquati c parasitology and was former head of Aquati c Parasitology at the Insti tute of Aquacul- ture at the University of Sti rling before joining Fish Vet Group Asia. While at Sti rling, he was also course director for an MSc distance learning programme, delivered in Bangladesh, and is the co-founder and overseas director of the Fish Museum & Biodiversity Center, Mymensin- gh, Bangladesh. He has authored more than 150 published arti cles, over 100 of which
