Adjuvantage Murray
It is possible to generate a robust and long lasting immune memory without the induction of risky side effects
BY CHRIS MITCHELL G 22
emma Murray, like her father Hugh, is well known and respected among the salmon farming community in the Highlands. Her compa- ny, Migdale Smolt, produces fi sh at three freshwater loch sites – Shin, Merkland and Damph – under contract for companies such as Marine
Harvest, Hjaltland, Wester Ross Salmon and Thompson Bros, up in Yell in the Shetland Isles. Many of the 2.2 million fi sh produced each year are delivered by fi ve
bespoke fi sh transporter lorries, which consti tute Hugh’s Migdale Transport Company, the other side of this integrated family business operati ng out of Bonar Bridge in Sutherland. Very soon, the well boat Migdale (650m3) will be arriving to complement
this capacity in Scotti sh waters. Producing smolts in the north-west Highlands is as challenging as it is
rewarding. Murray’s fi sh, parti cularly her S1 smolts – which have been through a highland winter - emerge as well-seasoned fi sh, ready for their life in the sea. In line with most smolt producers, Murray is keen to minimise intrusive
farming operati ons which involve excessive handling of stocks. Not only is this best practi ce, but it is also a key feature of sound welfare. However, there comes a ti me in every smolt’s life when a handling event
is unavoidable – vaccinati on. But with carefully planned, gentle interventi on and the deployment
of mild but effi cacious vaccine, this routi ne operati on can be executed with minimal risk to fi sh welfare and minimal interrupti on to normal producti on. For Murray, this means not only a quick return
to normal behaviour and feeding, but also the avoidance of ectopic infecti ons by parasites and fungus to which recently vaccinated fi sh can be suscepti ble. There are really two components which

together will contribute to this outcome. First, a well organised vaccinati on team which has been properly trained (training in vaccinati on can now be offi cially procured within a programme endorsed by LANTRA) will greatly enhance the outcome of vaccinati on and recovery of fi sh following the procedure. The key features of successful vaccinati on
include adequate fasti ng prior to anaesthesia, the controlled and monitored applicati on of the anaestheti c, and the steady and accurate applica- ti on of the vaccine. Pharmaq regularly supports
