A useful pest
to reduce the number of fish used in disease trials. ‘While this model will not replace experi-
ments on fi sh, it does let us do studies that are extremely diffi cult or impossible in fi sh, such as high-throughput screens for parti cularly virulent isolates,’ said Desbois. ‘New tools like this are helping us to under-
stand how bacteria cause disease and there- fore identi fy bett er ways to prevent or treat infecti ons.’
McMillan said: ‘Vibrio anguillarum was chosen “It lets us ”
do studies that are diffi cult in fi sh
to validate this new approach because it is well known and we had isolates that we knew had diff erent virulence in Atlanti c salmon from an earlier study. ‘However, we expect this caterpillar model to be useful for studying other problem bacteria.’ Greater wax moths are a global pest that can
infest beehives and cause colonies to collapse. But these insects are produced commercially as feed for pet repti les, while in recent years they have also served as a model to understand human pathogens and test the eff ects of novel anti bioti cs. The study, funded by the University of Sti rling and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science, was published last month in the internati onal peer reviewed journal BMC Microbiology.
