Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Battalion

» William Maitland served in the battalion. Now his son has shared photos M

embers of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce were eager to contribute to the First World War effort and so as part of the rapid

expansion of the regular army, a batalion was formed. On 3 September 1914, following a unanimous decision by the Chamber leadership, Te 17th Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Batalion) came into being. Glasgow Chamber recently received an email from Robin Maitland of Victoria, Australia,

along with photographs of his father William Maitland, who served with Te 17th Highland Light Infantry (Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Batalion). We are delighted to share these with our members along with a few details of his life. Te bell tent picture is of William Maitland

(service no 15393), taken at Gailes Camp 1914 (third up on the leſt) with the reverse side being date stamped. William was brought up in Kirkintilloch and educated at Glasgow High School. Upon his

return from the army, he studied Veterinary Science at the University of Glasgow and graduated in 1924. He moved to Australia then New Zealand in 1928, where he practiced as a vet and met his wife. He and his wife moved to Dorset in 1934

where both their children were born. William practised there and also became an air raid warden in Weymouth during World War II. In 1948, the family moved back to Australia where he lived and worked in Hobart, Tasmania, until his death in 1976.
