» Glasgow Chamber to help secure young people jobs in its network


G


lasgow Chamber of Commerce is to host the first regional Invest in Young


People Group. Te trailblazing initiative will


seek to improve links between education and the world of work and increase opportunities for young people in Scotland’s biggest city. Te creation of such groups was one of the key recommendations of the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce, chaired by industrialist Sir Ian Wood, and Glasgow Chamber will develop the tools to put it into practice. Te Glasgow group will work


with the business community and partners in local government to develop a modern system of work-based training that will ensure young people are ready for the jobs market. Te regional group was publicly


launched at the start of February when Roseanna Cunningham MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training, visited Chamber member the Glasgow Marriot Hotel. Tere, she met representatives


from Glasgow Chamber and the Glasgow Employer Board. Ms Cunningham said: “While there is a considerable amount of


good work happening in Glasgow, I recognise that much more can be done to support its young women and men towards sustainable and rewarding jobs. “Employers will play a key


role in work to implement the recommendations of the Commission for Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce during the next seven years. We want an improved system of vocational education that opens up a wider range of work opportunities to everyone, whatever their background or gender. “Te young people of Glasgow


can be assured some of the city’s key players are working together for their future.” Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive


of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, said: “Youth unemployment is one of the significant challenges of our economic times, and in Glasgow the jobless rate for young people is much higher than for any other age group.” Mr Patrick said that there was


a well-established network of businesses ready to work on the issue co-ordinated by a team based at Glasgow Chamber. He added: “Te helpful


findings of our own Youth Employment Action Group, which includes contributions from many of Glasgow’s leading
