PROTECT YOUR

Information security breaches take many forms… and soon they’ll come with penalties D

ata held by any business, large or small, is immensely valuable and must be protected.

As most of us realise,

information held electronically can be at risk from viruses and other malicious activity, and the dangers are always evolving. According to Stuart Hooson of Pinnacle Technology in Glasgow,

it isn’t always the bad guys lurking in the internet undergrowth who can cause difficulties. Sometimes an employee,

innocently atempting to work beter or more effectively, inadvertently makes data available to the wider world. Te simple act of copying

information to an unencrypted USB stick and taking that home to

complete a job makes company data vulnerable. Although most malicious

acts emanate from outside the business, approximately 70 per cent of data breaches – malicious and otherwise – come from inside the network. Similarly, it is rare for SMEs to be the victims of a targeted hack, but everyone is at risk of malware distributed

through the web, and randomly targeted spam. Generally speaking, gone are

the days of junk email, yet trends like the increase in user-generated content can make it easier for malicious code to be added to websites. Adding to potential problems,

businesses that fall foul of atacks can find themselves blacklisted
