Free trade is good for all
A major priority for Glasgow Chamber is the promotion of free trade and the growth of Scotland’s exports. As we outline in an article on pages 42-43, it is a theme that goes back to the origins of Glasgow Chamber in the late 18th century. Your Chamber does, as it always has done, all it can to promote trade overseas and to ensure that more Glasgow businesses take up such opportunities. This ranges from practical
help providing export certificates and documents for local companies to our current Commission examining issues around international trade. (Please see the item on page 8 asking members to share their experience of overseas trade for us to feature in future issues.) It extends to our vigorous support for the
expansion of Glasgow Airport and the successful campaign for Air Passenger Duty to be devolved.
We also seek to encourage free trade more widely
for the reasons we set out in an article on pages 42- 43 in this issue. We work from the assumption that free trade is good for all – and so will be good for the economy in Glasgow and for all who live here. This principle should be borne in mind when considering some of the more colourful responses to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. TTIP has implications for many different sectors and businesses and these must be carefully considered. But we must also remember that – with the Doha trade round derailed – TTIP is the only game in town to ease trade between the
European Union and the United States, an area
which together amounts for around 60 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product. The UK Government’s estimate of the potential annual boost from the implementation of a
“successful and ambitious” TTIP is £10 billion a year – a slice of which will come to Glasgow city region, its businesses and their employees. It is indeed a significant prize and one worth putting more than a little effort into attaining. This issue and the wider principle are important
ones to consider, not least when thinking about how to cast your vote in the forthcoming UK General Election in May. There is a lot of potential for decisions to be
made for social reasons – minimum pricing for alcohol and sugar taxing are two examples. But these build up regulatory pressures, making it more difficult for companies to trade internationally and inviting responses from overseas. These can have major effects on Chamber members who are significant employers in the city region. There is much evidence to show that while free,
open trade benefits all, tariffs, significant trade restrictions and outright protectionism and the resulting ‘tit for tat’ responses normally lead to less business and less economic growth on all sides.
