How to build an effective
workforce fit for the future » Framework gives employers resources to secure the right skills
S
cotland is a country high in skills but this does not always translate into enhanced economic performance. In these times of economic uncertainty it
is vital that organisations have the right people in the right jobs. Tis increases productivity and, in turn, benefits the economy. To ensure that employers have access to the resources and support that they require to do this, Glasgow Chamber has been continuing to work in partnership with the Scotish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) and recently held a breakfast information event entitled Building a Skilled Workforce for the Future as well as a training workshop. Te SCQF provides a national vocabulary
for describing learning programmes and qualifications, making the relationships between them clearer. It also offers a wealth of benefits for employers, including avoiding costly mistakes in recruitment and training, recognising what further skills your employees need and planning this effectively, recognising the formal and informal learning your employees have taken part in and helping them to make further progress. Other benefits include gaining credit for your own in-house training programmes, developing a skills and learning strategy for your organisation and recruiting the right people for your team. A key aim of the SCQF is to enable
employers to understand the full range of Scotish qualifications, how the qualifications relate to one another and how different types of qualifications can contribute to improving the skills of the workforce. In particular, the SCQF can be used as
a tool to help employers increase the effectiveness of recruitment and improve workforce development. Te SCQF has 12 levels and the level of a qualification shows how difficult the learning is. Each level on the SCQF has a set of descriptors or competencies that an employee might demonstrate at that particular level. Julie Cavanagh, Manager at SCQF, said at
the event: “When recruiting staff, how you specify the level of skill or competence that you need applicants to have is important. Depending on how you put it, you can decrease or increase the pool of potential talent from which to select. By using the SCQF
levels in your recruitment processes, including your job description and advertisement, you and your potential employees can beter understand the skills you need, allowing you, the employer, to recruit the right person for the job. Both public and private sector employers of all sizes are already experiencing a range of benefits in using the SCQF, including clearer career progression routes for employees and clarification on where employees’ achievements sit compared to other nationally recognised qualifications.” Elaine Rodger, Head of Training and
Development at Glasgow Chamber, who hosted the breakfast event, said: “We really welcomed the opportunity to build on our relationship with the SCQF and to ensure that our members are aware of the comprehensive range of support available from the SCQF to support their workforce development.
