Glasgow’s success in hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games was reflected in a raft of awards in the New Year Honours List. Gordon Matheson, Leader of


Glasgow City Council, was awarded a CBE while Archie Graham, Deputy Leader of the Council, received an OBE for services to local government including his work on delivery of the Games. Bridget McConnell, Glasgow


2014 board member and Chief Executive of Glasgow Life, received a CBE for her services to culture. Jon Doig, Chief Executive of

Successful ballot for West End BID


A new Business Improvement District (BID) is to be created in the West End of the city following a positive vote by local business leaders at the end of February.


The Visit West End – Byres Road and the Lanes BID will go ahead after the ballot, which saw 106 votes cast in favour of the BID proposal and 23 against. Those voting amounted to 63 per cent of those who were eligible to vote in the ballot. The scheme is expected to mean


that £1 million will be invested in the area over the next five years. Paul Reynolds, Chairman of the


Byres Road BID steering group, said he was delighted with the outcome of the vote.


Commonwealth Games Scotland, and Francesca Osowska, Director of Commonwealth Games and Sport at the Scottish Government both received OBEs. The Scottish Government’s


Derek Bearhop, Head of the Games Delivery Team, and Diane McLafferty, Deputy Director Commonwealth Games, were both awarded MBEs. Euan Burton, who was chosen


as Team Scotland standard bearer, received an MBE for services to his sport. Burton won a gold medal in the Judo under-100kg division.

to teach on our programmes, our students benefit from up-to- date, practical teaching from a real-life perspective. We will be incorporating this experience into our new NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health which we will be launching in Partnership with G & A Wilson in September 2015.
