That only left the long ride home. While I’m glad I rode through the Prairies, I really never have to do it again. There was one stretch outside Brooks, Alberta where the only way we knew we were moving was because of the bugs splattering on our face shields. The horizon and view never changed.
Road rage in Regina? That apparently means throwing empty Timmies cups at each other. But road rage on the ring road around Winnipeg, with a truck passing on the shoulder, just about took out a cyclist and two of our group. You know you’ve hit the Ontario
border, when the road get rough and it goes from four lanes to two at a lower speed limit. We saw more police in three days in Ontario than in the rest of the trip combined.
It was a great trip, but we didn’t get it all right. If we did, there’d be no reason to go back and do it again. I brought the wrong rain suit. We didn’t get a lot of rain, but when it did, I needed my heavy one and not my Frogg Toggs.
In South Dakota, I want to see more of the Badlands and Black Hills. We didn’t see the Crazy Horse memorial. In Yellowstone, we did see some volcanic vents and bison, but we didn’t get over to Old Faithful. We did, however, get out before most of the tourists got in. We’d plan the gas stops in more detail and not rely quite so heavily on the GPS.
One time, leaving a small town,
we didn’t fill up because the GPS said gas was 22 miles away. As the crow flies, that was. The road curved away from where the gas was and then over a mountain. By the time we got to the nearest gas station, we did the calculations and the Ducati had 0.1L of gas left. I had about 1L left. Too close! Oh and the fairing bolt? Three dollars for stainless steel. I bought some spares.
