these folks are independent, creative and enjoy themselves. As we hit the top of each prominence (and there were lots of them) we had a new vision of back country living. We roared up a rise and found


what we were searching for: that something (or someone) special; something that is so unique that you could only find it hidden on the back roads. Did you ever wonder what kind


of an abode a gifted wood carver would build if he took out a building permit in the 1970s and was still constructing in 2015? It’s impossible to properly describe this magical residence of stone and wood. All I could say was wow! What a treasure! Totally oblivious of the fact that


these folks live here because they cherish their privacy, we stopped in. We assumed anyone who could build this incredible edifice had to be totally all right. And of course he was.


He showed us his house,


work shop and treasures that he had collected over a lifetime of wandering the woods. As just one example, a neighbor found an old telegraph insulator encapsulated into a knarled tree trunk, so our woodworker made it into a dragon’s

head with a shiny glass (insulator) eye.


This man is totally cool, and


his wife is a sweetie too. They’re a couple anyone would want to befriend. “But,” he said, “please don’t tell


people where I live, as I enjoy my quiet life.” He was adamant about


his privacy. So of course we’re keeping their names and location a secret. Off we rambled again, my buddy


thoroughly enjoying the ride through this hobbit kingdom, while I tried to figure out how to write an article about a great road trip destination
