Something Wicked This
Way Comes kicks off the second disc, a warning of sorts in the vein of Get Right with God from 2001’s Essence. Appropriately wicked electric guitar from Tony Joe White drives it, just as his licks and harmonica accompany William’s affected, accusatory vocals so well on the rumbling, menacing West Memphis. Big Mess is defiantly tough,
even while acknowledging weaknesses, with a couple of great guitar breaks. It’s Gonna Rain is mournful but brightened by harmony vocals from Jakob Dylan, while This Old Heartache is wistful country as the title suggests – and which Lucinda does so well. She’s positive too: a
reflection, perhaps, on the serenity of her personal life. It’s a state she’s not always enjoyed in the past. On beautiful songs like Walk On, When I Look at The World, Stowaway in Your Heart and Stand Right By Each Other, there is joy and hope in abundance. She closes this very fine
album with a nearly 10-minute version of the late, great J.J. Cale’s Magnolia. It’s a fitting choice – a sweet southern love song by a southern gal making it her own. It’s just her touring rhythm section, two electric guitars, her husky voice and acoustic guitar stretching it out way beyond the three-and-a- half-minute original. Completely fitting is the
album cover art by Birney Imes from his book Juke Joint. Almost every song here is like a knife through the heart – powerfully strong, achingly memorable.
