SWITZERLAND continued from page 21
without telling anyone where it is. (If you ever think you’ve found it, please be respectful and don’t drop in.)
The voyage though valleys, dales
and vales continued, with the top of each knoll disclosing a unique barn, house or someone’s constructed image of the good life. Abruptly our voyage of
discovery ended back out on a major thoroughfare. We twisted down a great winding road then, over the canal, through Newboro and down to Crosby on Hwy 15. We were a might peckish by then, so we headed to downtown Elgin for breakfast. The Elgin Dinner (AKA the
Rideau Pizzeria and Restaurant) is a back roader’s destination. The venue is a clean, eclectic mixture of new and old, with 1950s bar stools competing with modern Home
Hardware light fixtures. The food is good, the service is superb (say hello to Sherry for us) and most importantly, the people (patrons and staff) are great. We explored rustic Elgin,
wondering what it would be like to live in a small village, and ended back out on Highway 15 again. We headed north back into the
dell country, got lost among the glades, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We saw farms, turkeys, deer, rocks and trees. We felt the sun pouring in and listened to the sound of the tires on the dirt road. We greedily inhaled the fresh air, enjoyed our freedom and wondered where we could go next week and who or what we would meet – if we only had an idea of where to go.
