CAMPING IN BEAR COUNTRY Something to “bear in mind” this spring in your travels afield is the fact that winter hibernation for Ursus Americana is coming to an end. During early spring, black bears

emerge from their dens, and when berries and other natural forage are not immediately available, bears will eat whatever they can scrounge. In some cases, this could mean scraps of food around your campsite,

natural trout lake no one else knows about, but by micro-managing this special water body into a world-class trout fishery. With the grace of the Almighty, we have managed to keep this magnificent lake hidden from the rest of the world for more than a decade. Our average brook trout now tips the scales at more than three pounds. We have caught (and released) several five-pound-plus specimens over the years.

VALLEY OUTDOOR ACTION The ever-popular Valley Fishing and Outdoors Show is a spring classic among outdoor enthusiasts. It seems to draw sportsmen and women out of the woodwork. The 15th year for this event, the Valley Fishing and Outdoors Show, is thanks to avid outdoorsman Dave Arbour. This year’s show is set for March 27–29 at the Carp Fairgrounds and Arena, featuring everything from casting ponds to archery, shooting and fishing simulators. The show’s attendance has grown over the past few years, with more than 13,500 visitors last year. Dave’s reputation and past success has been a contributing factor in making this show the largest of its kind in Eastern Ontario.
