huge pod of dolphins jumping and diving for food. There had to be 500 of them and I got a great video of them as they surrounded our boat. The other thing we observed in the Discovery passage and the Georgia Strait was the ferocity of the incoming and outgoing tides that reach speeds of 15 knots. We fished for the first couple

of hours and then headed north to Chatham Point, where Tom figured the Chum would stack up before heading to the Fraser River. On the way there, we saw a black bear cub foraging for clams on the beach. With the rain and overcast

weather, the fishing was slow, but great stories from Tom moved things along at a good pace. When we took the 20-minute boat ride back, we immediately hit a large fish. Since it was my turn, I had the pleasure of fighting and watching

an 11-pound Coho jump four or five times before boating him. Scott caught another Chum, about 13 pounds, a little while later, and our day was complete. Tom was a little upset that the fish weren’t co-operating, but as I told him, the fish were just a bonus. On our final day of fishing,

we decided to give it six more hours .We fished the wall and then travelled further north to Howe Island where tons of boats were focusing their fishing efforts. In 300 feet of water, and running our lures 80 feet down, we hit another dandy: an 11 pound Coho. What a great fight! As it turned out, this would be our last fish of the trip, but a fantastic experience nonetheless. If you have ever wanted to

do some salmon fishing or whale watching on the west coast, I suggest you check out Painters Lodge in Campbell River. The most productive times for fishing

are the last two weeks of June and the first two of July. There are salmon around all the time. You’ll have the time of your life. When you get a chance to go fishing

with your son and share time and stories and tick off another item on the bucket list, it is an unforgettable experience. I wonder what will be next on that

list? Bowhunting for moose or fishing at Great Slave or Great Bear Lake? Maybe hitting a tee shot at Pebble Beach? Stay tuned!
