The brand new Yamaha FJR? It got some bugs splattered on it, but otherwise that just left time for endless ribbing about the benefits of shaft drive, while the other three were lubing and adjusting chains at the end of the day.
The one thing that was evident on other trips is that the new bikes with electronic suspension are worth every penny. The Duc and the Yamaha were up front riding as smooth as can be over a long stretch of four-lane concrete slab highway. The old Suzukis at the back had us looking like life sized bobble-heads. That, and adjustable windshields. With the Yamaha, you push the switch and up it goes, making clean air. The Ducati is manual-adjustable on the fly. My Suzuki? Well, I did cut the screen down before leaving. There was a lot of airflow, but it was smooth... except on the Interstate around trucks. Yes you can make lots of distance in a short amount of time on the Interstate, but the best trips have the least amount of Interstate. The perfect trip would have no Interstate at all, but this trip had unfortunately large amounts, which happens when you have to cross the middle of the continent. The Interstate isn’t all bad. Rolling through Montana where the speed limit is just a suggestion was a ball! In Northern California just south of Weed (home of the “I Love Weed” t-shirt!), there is a section of I-5 going through the mountains that is a highly entertaining motorcycle road. One reason I want to get off the Interstate is to see the country. On the two lanes you get to see the real country and meet the real people. For example, Idaho. If you asked me about Idaho, I’d have thought
