every day Gordie Brown must walk the high wire that has caused so many celebrities to tumble from on high onto the front pages of the tabloids. Although he loves living “the
Elvis showbiz life, a rock star life,” as he likes to call it, his main priority is his family. Happily married with five kids, Gordie has managed to balance his home life with the
incredible demands on his time and his devotion to his fans. He recently finished up a
blockbuster North American tour, opening for Celine Dion. Then it was back to Vegas to headline the Golden Nugget. There are the corporate events to headline, the hands to shake, the autographs to sign and TV shows like Late Night with David Letterman. And there is always the
homework. He is constantly working on new voices to keep his show fresh

for a younger generation of Vegas vacationers. It’s homework that separates
a professional from a wanna-be. Gordie doesn’t think he has a God- given gift for voices. He just works hard at something he loves to do. “Your voice is a muscle, so you
have to train it to hone it, and then you get it.” Case in point: comedian Gilbert
Gottfried. Gilbert has perhaps the most recognizable voice in show business, but Gordie says it was probably the hardest voice he ever had to learn. “Doing Gilbert would hurt my
throat, and in the beginning it really wasn’t even close. That said to me that if I can get Gilbert down, then pretty well any voice is do-able.” (Did he ever “get” Gilbert?
Well, he gave me about 30 seconds of Gottfried and he had me on the floor.) Gordie told me some of the
newer stars are tough to imitate. “But if you stick at it, they will
come.” New additions to his repertoire
include Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, and Norm McDonald. But those first voices he learned
in front of the mirror in Saint- Eustache are still in the act: staples like John Wayne, Willie Nelson, Michael Jackson, and, of course, his much-celebrated routine as The King. Viva Las Vegas! Gordie Brown’s story is the stuff
of dreams. He has achieved what every kid dreams of as he or she dances in front of the mirror or tells that first joke on a stage. But there is no pixie-dust in this
story, no auto-tune to compensate for shortcomings. It happened because he worked hard at his craft, had a vision of where he wanted to be; and after he got there, continued to put in the work to stay on top. It’s a life lesson he passes on to his kids, his fans and anyone who thinks they can’t follow their dream. Viva Gordie Brown!
