Who cares? ….. it really doesn’t matter!!
A few weeks ago, nobody, apart from
a few friends and family, had ever heard of Katie Cutler. Now over 28,000 people, both in the UK and around the world, not only know of her, but hold her high in their estimation. WHY?
...because she cared.
She heard about a fellow Geordie, called Alan Barnes, who was disabled, and was mugged, outside his own home. Not only was he injured in the attack; but he was so traumatised by it that he was scared to return. Katie, who had never met Alan, decided to see if she could help him get over this appalling event. Now the world knows that she set up a fund raising site on the Internet so that she could raise £500 to help refurnish his home. In the event, over £329,550 was raised in a matter of a few days, until Alan, and his family, asked that the site be shut down. Now Alan will not only have a new fully equipped new home, but all the surplus funds will be distributed the suitable good causes.
Katie cared about her fellow human being, as did the many thousand others who donated not just money, but time and products to help Alan. They all show that when people come together in a worthy venture the outcome can not only be rewarding, but often spectacularly successful.
Rotary’s motto “Service above Self” ensures that its members are similarly minded. They give as much of their time as they can, to help many diff erent people not only in the UK but around the world, both with fund raising activities, and often with personal eff ort as well.
Your local Rotary Club is very grateful each year for all the funds raised from our community, and the support from local businesses, that are given to the causes we support. However, while we have over 40 active members, we are always looking to encourage others to join us. You do not need to make a signifi cant time commitment, nor does it matter what gender you are, you will be most welcome into what is a very friendly, and fun loving Club, that truly cares for others.
