Your choice of home care providers If you are eligible, ACAT will provide you with the contact details of home care providers in your area.

Once you have found a suitable home care provider that you would like to work with, they will offer you a home care package and develop a care plan.

Your chosen provider will also work out a plan for you to understand how funds are being spent on your care.

Cost of Home Care Packages The Australian Government pays for the bulk of aged care but you may be asked to contribute towards the cost of your care if you can afford to do so. You will never be denied the care you need because you cannot afford it.

The funding program or package through which you access aged care services at home will determine how much you will need to pay. Any fees will be discussed and agreed upon with your service provider before you receive the relevant services. Your service provider may ask you to pay:

• a basic fee of up to 17.5 per cent of the single basic Age Pension

• an income-tested care fee if your income is over a certain amount.

Basic fee

Everyone taking up a Home Care Package can be asked by their service provider to pay the basic fee. The basic fee for a Home Care Package, including Consumer Directed Care, that the service provider may charge is up to $135.80 per person per fortnight. This rate increases on March 20 and September 20 each year in line with changes to the Age Pension. This applies to each person receiving a Home Care Package, even if you are a member of a couple.

Income-tested care fee Depending on your income, you may be asked by your service provider to contribute more to the cost of your care.

You need to negotiate the costs with your provider. These costs will be agreed upon and fixed in your agreement before you receive any aged care service.

Levels of Home Care Packages There are four levels of packages to cater for different needs: (An assessment by an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) is required before you can receive a Home Care Package.)

The four levels of Home Care Packages are:

Level 1 Supports people with basic care needs.

Level 2 Supports people with low -level care needs (equivalent to the former Community Aged Care Package (CACP).

Level 3

Supports people with intermediate care needs.

Level 4 Supports people with high-level care needs (equivalent to the former Extended Aged Care at Home (EACH) package).
