GUPA has been running an indoor open league during the winter months for a number of years. There are also many mixed leagues for players of all skill levels to join throughout the season. Identifying that many women playing the sport had never been exposed to women’s Ultimate, a Sunday women’s league was started.
Because GUPA is a not-for-profit organization it was essential to be able to recover the costs of fields. Since a women’s league had never been run before GUPA wanted to lower the cost as much as possible to encourage players to come out and give women’s a try. The league was very successful in its first year with over 30 women registering. This success has been encouraging and GUPA decided to run the league again the following winter. Because the league is still new, GUPA is still figuring out what is the best way to run the league to include all skill levels while still promoting a competitive outlet for female players in Guelph.
GUPA would like to thank Ultimate Canada and VC Ultimate for their support in starting up this league. A number of women have commented that the league led to greater confidence on the field. Some women were also encouraged to try out for touring teams in the summer with that extra confidence!
High School Ultimate Circuit (2013) - Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association (OCUA)
OCUA presented the first edition of the High School Ultimate Circuit in 2013. High school students and coaches in the Ottawa-Carleton region were invited to participate in the Ultimate Circuit throughout the 2013-2014 school year. All they had to do was to form an Ultimate team in their school, sign up for tournaments, play Ultimate and accumulate points.
Teams accumulated points based on three criteria: Participation, Ranking and Spirit. After each tournament, a temporary ranking of all the teams was published on the OCUA website. Teams with the most points at the end of the season won prizes. The prizes were offered by OCUA and by sponsors (VC Ultimate and Daredevil).
The Circuit was also a way to connect local high schools and give the coaches a communication platform. It was also a way for OCUA to encourage those local events to add a Spirit of the Game component to their event.
The “Junior Clinic Ultimate Kit” for coaches (2011) - Saint John Ultimate Recreational League (SURL).
SURL received the Ultimate Canada – VC Ultimate Junior Innovation Grant for their innovative way of providing resources to their coaches.
