Sold out Ultimate Canada Conference a huge Success Toronto plays host to the ninth annual Ultimate Canad
a Conference.
Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, The Fairmont Royal York was the perfect venue to host the ninth annual Ultimate Canada Conference. Attending delegates were greeted by freezing temperatures and snow in typical Canadian fashion. The 2014 Ultimate Canada Conference presented by VC Ultimate had over 100 delegates and was the first UCC to sell out.
Friday was an opportunity to explore Toronto and kick-start the conference with some interactive optional sessions. A group of keeners went to check out the Hockey Hall of Fame in the morning. Being induction weekend, there was a buzz of excitement about the whole city. In the afternoon, Melissa Witmer from Ultimate Results offered two agility- training sessions and Mario O’Brien from Rise Up Ultimate led back-to-back coaching clinics. It wouldn’t be the UCC without a little socializing would it? Friday evening provided the perfect opportunity for everyone to get to know one another at the meet and greet hosted by VC Ultimate.
On Saturday morning, Robert “Nob” Rauch, president of the World Flying Disc Federation, treated conference delegates to a wonderful presentation covering Ultimate’s global presence. After the special presentation from WFDF, delegates broke off into morning sessions. Saturday afternoon sessions were highlighted with presentations by two professionals in the sporting world. Alyson Walker from Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment discussed leadership perspectives she’s gained throughout her professional
and athletic career. Across the hall, Garry Watanabe led an engaging presentation on how to successfully play the role of the underdog.
Despite the engaging day of learning and discussion, many delegates headed out to Monarch Park to play in a Five Ultimate-hosted game. As snow fell outside the dome, it’s a good thing we were inside. Sweaty but happy delegates returned to the hotel and moseyed over to Shoeless Joe’s Sports Grill where Ultimate Central sponsored some appetizers and beer.
Without missing a beat, sessions began first thing Sunday morning. JP Riopel and Brent Burton used their professional experience to discuss injury prevention and concussion awareness while league leaders discussed success and failure of their new initiatives. Other highlights from day two included Mario O’Brien’s interactive coaching presentation where he broke down key teaching aspects for all coaches to work on and three national team coaches discussed their approach to team building and strategy.
The 2014 UCC provided the sold out delegate list with an excellent balance of presentations and interactive discussions led by knowledgeable and engaging members of the Ultimate community. With over 100 attendees, the UCC also opened up the opportunity to socialize and make valuable connections from across the country. The Ultimate community continues to surprise and motivate us and we hope to see an even bigger group in Halifax next year for UCC 2015.
