Borderline wins first Atlantic gold at CUC

Atlantic By: Mark Tekamp

This past summer brought about a new achievement for Atlantic Canada. The east coast men’s masters team, Borderline won gold at the Canadian Ultimate Championships. Borderline is a team comprised of players from all over the northeast, including some players from the state of Maine, and has been primarily playing the USAU fall series as a masters team. Teammates often have played against each other in eastern and central region tournaments for years and the masters division created an opportunity for a brand new outlook on the game.

championship bracket to play established elite teams such as Boneyard and Surly (we lost … by a lot). Nonetheless, the sense was that we met our original goal and the decision was made to make the switch to play Canadian tournaments for 2014.

As a result, the fans created a “home” team type atmosphere that really buoyed Borderline in the final and everyone was so thankful for that. Secondly, this is the first ever CUC gold medal to make its way east of Quebec. Lastly, it is important to note that the masters division is improving in caliber as more and more athletes choose to continue playing this game. The masters division and grand master divisions create a chance for anyone in our sport to build on the athletic investment they have already put in and also to find new opportunities to train, travel and compete.

Borderline was formed in 2011 with a three year vision to try and build an east coast club that could have enough players to sustain a roster each season, build on each year to continuously improve and try and create a seamless transition for older masters teammates into the grand masters division. Borderline first experienced a degree of success by winning top seed in the 2013 USAU regional series earning a trip to Denver to play in the National Championships.
