With nearly 200 players in attendance at this year’s Team Canada Under 23 tryouts, this was the most competitive and difficult U23 selection process to date. Working together, the coaches designed the team selection plan in an effort to create the best teams possible across all three divisions and also to help foster a unified Team Canada along the way. This selection plan took into consideration feedback from Ultimate Canada and the head coaches of the previous U23 teams.
Following tryouts in September 2014, a Team Canada roster of 41 men and 38 women was selected, consisting of the most talented men and women from across the country. After the announcement of the roster, players will be provided training opportunities in their local communities, with workouts, and winter league being the primary focus. We hope that by encouraging team members to train together, and with coaches in their area through the winter, there will be more collaboration and working together as a unit later in the season.
Following winter training, all team members will gather together to participate in an early spring event. At this event the players will play in both the single gender and mixed divisions to help the coaches determine the best combinations and strengths of the players. Following this event the rosters for each division will be finalized. The team bonding that will take place during the winter training and spring event will further enforce the ONE Team Canada culture and community amongst all U23 players that we believe is critical for success across all three divisions. Once the rosters have been finalized each team will have at least one training camp and will attend one to two tournaments prior to partaking in worlds. These tournaments will be decided over the winter and will be based on timing, cost and strength of competition.
We believe initially selecting one large Team Canada has many advantages, including encouraging early collaboration between coaches and players, permitting cross competition for roster spots between players from different regions and allowing the coaches more time to evaluate the players in different roles and situations.
The Team Canada 2015 coaches believe that by selecting ONE Team Canada for the winter, and finalizing rosters in Spring of 2015 we will develop a strong team identity, encourage teamwork, and in the end have the best overall results at the Worlds as possible.
