Spirit of the Game and Positive Youth Development: Exploring the Perspectives of High Performance Youth Ultimate Frisbee Players (2010) - Lakehead University and University of Alberta.
The purpose of this project was to explore the high performance Ultimate playing experiences of youth athletes. In particular, the authors were interested in understanding how players experience Spirit of the Game and self-refereeing, aspects that are unique to Ultimate. Members of a Canadian junior women’s Ultimate team took part in various study activities as part of their participation in a junior World Championship. These activities included keeping a reflective journal throughout the tournament and an individual follow-up interview once the tournament was completed. The findings are captured in the following three themes: 1. the Ultimate spirit, 2. the Ultimate sport and community, and 3. the Ultimate player.
Ultimate afforded the players in this study many meaningful and unique opportunities to engage in the sport in a supportive environment that was recognized as distinctive from players’ experiences in other sports. Players attributed this in large part to the Spirit of the Game. Unfortunately, this important aspect of the game was vulnerable to the strong desire players had to win. Because sport is so prevalent in the lives of Canadian youth and has the potential to contribute in both positive and negative ways to their development, the authors of this research encourage teammates, coaches and opponents to mentor young Ultimate players in ways that model and support strong and unyielding Spirit of the Game.
