CUUC I Gold - University of Manitoba ~ Stor
y b
This year was a very different CUUC from years past in that there was a two tier system (CUUC I and CUUC II) which divided the teams regionally to qualify and made the tournament a much more competitive environment. At first, most of the team was admittedly skeptical of the new two tiered structure, however that quickly changed as it became a major incentive to perform and ensure we play to the level that would best reflect the work that was done throughout this very short season.
Our goal was clear especially after last year’s somewhat disappointing 7th place finish. Gold was becoming a more tangible objective especially after a strong showing in the states as well as against Regina at CPUUC. Every team participating in CUUC I worked hard to be there and the atmosphere made this evident.

We were more focused than any other year and that meant: waking up earlier for warmup, getting everyone mentally and physically focused, up calls on every throw, consistent communication and finally camaraderie unmatched by any tournament most of us have previously attended. Another very welcome facet was the turf fields that proved to be impervious to the weather and provided us with a durable playing field.
Finally it all came down to a very athletic Queen’s University team facing off against our skilled and practiced team in a truly competitive (albeit windy) final. Participating in a tournament final at a national event is definitely something special, and due to the experience and depth from our club players, that took us to the top.
Competitively speaking, we had a difficult route on Sunday as our quarter and semi-final games were decided by either time cap or a tight point gap. The parity amongst the teams was high and it seemed as if any one mistake could have left any team on the outside looking in; which made the national title all the more desired and deserved. Ultimately, this year’s nationals truly brought to light the ever- growing university talent across the country. Further tournaments like this will, no doubt, foster the excellent level of play amongst Canada’s universities.
