Promoting spirit through our indoor series
Quebec By: Nicolas Vanasse
The Federation Quebecoise d’Ultimate made a bold move with new rules governing how evaluating Spirit in their indoor series tournaments.
At the FQU, we believe that with those initiatives will help us understand where to focus our work around Spirit (more knowledge of the rules, the body contacts, the fair-mindedness, etc.). It will also help the competitive members to get familiarised with the tools used by Ultimate Canada and WFDF during the nationals and internationals events. The more we perform spirit evaluations, the better we can get, and the more accurate this process will be able to diagnose some spirit issues.
Here’s how things will work out this year:
•Spirit will be now calculated during all seven games of the tournament (often we used to note spirit score only for the Saturday to crown the spirit champions during the tournament party)
•The WFDF spirit score sheet will be used in all the events (score out of 20, based on 5 categories)
•Just like during the CUC series and the CUUC series, the tournament director or the FQU competition director will automatically seek for explanations on every poor score in a category
•Spirit scores will be published after each tournament, and the competition director will follow up with any team that scores low results
•We’ll publish, in our newsletter, the teams that are improving their spirit scores throughout the season
•We used to give 50 points on the general season standing to the top three spirit teams at each tournament. We still do, but this year, our rating scales are revised. The impact of the 50 bonus points is significant. The best example for this happen at the movember, the first major tournament of the season, where ‘’Ninjax’’ finished 2nd and ‘’les outs’’ won the tournament. Due to a spirit award, ‘’Ninjax’’ got more points than ‘’Les outs’’ on the season standing.
