NEW CHOICES FOR POSITIVE AGING IN SONOMA COUNTY WORKSHOP SERIES PROVIDES INSIGHTS

to our lifespan. How are you planning to spend your second adult life-time? Although we live in a society where tra- ditional myths about aging are routinely advertised and ex- ploited, factual proof about a new wave of positive aging is rap- idly gaining ground. Neuroscience emphatically

that our brains con- tinue to improve as we age, until, at around age 60, we are at our very best. How ironic that our socially-

time of retirement coincides with this peak in our develop-

ment. Yet this presents us with an extraordinary opportunity - IF we can fi nd the courage to freely explore our deeper

potential, and to re-create our- selves in ways that were never before possible.

Evidence for the above state- ments is scientifi cally abundant, with terms like neuroplasticity, neurogenesis, bilateralism, cre- ative cognition and emotional regulation; however, the great- est evidence may be found at the heart of our own awareness, our own historical perspective. The big question is: How will you spend the gift of these additional years? The Col- laborative on Positive Aging (COPA), a community col- laborative formed to support and promote positive aging in Sonoma County, is asking and answering this question with a year-long series of workshops entitled “Planning For Your Longevity”.

This series continues through December with upcoming top- ics on the legal aspects of ag- ing, meaning purpose and leg- acy, spiritual living, and a fi nal

session to bring the year’s work together and plan how to con- tinue the work individually and together.

The workshops are held monthly in both Petaluma and Santa Rosa. All are welcome to participate in any or all ses- sions, and attendance is on a donation basis. Details of dates, times, locations and a summary of each session can be found at www.councilonaging.com

der the “aging” tab. COPA believes that ap- proaching the opportunities and challenges of aging with confi dence, creativity, and community support is a major key as to how we will all best experience our elder years. If you would like help as you be- gin to create your own second adulthood, you are invited to join us in our workshop series, where you will meet with like- minded men and women who choose to create their own posi- tive aging experience.

In a class on abnormal psychology, the

instructor was about to introduce the subject of manic depression.

She posed this question to her students: “How would you diagnose a patient who walks back and forth screaming at the top of his lungs one minute, then sits down weeping uncontrollably the next?”

A young man in the rear raised his hand and suggested earnestly, “A football coach?”
