An Interview with Chance
Massaro By the Upbeat Times & Chance Massaro
UPBEAT TIMES: I am interviewing Chance Massaro. Chance is the principal of Memory Back Guarantee, the author of four books on learn- ing, a regular contributor to the Upbeat Times and the pro- ducer with Teresa Fogolini of the second annual Successful Brain Fair. Welcome Chance, What’s the good word?
CHANCE MASSARO: Thanks for the opportunity to chat, Paul. I really appreciate being in your positive paper. Actually there are two good words these days: epigenetics and neurogenisis.
UT: Whoa! Big, good words for sure. Tell the readers about epigenetics.
CM: Epigenetics has to do with the fact that the brain and the body and the environment are one. We now understand

that while your genes are the blueprint for who and what you are, they are subject to change throughout your life. The most encouraging thing is the fact that you can change how genes are infl uencing your life. In other words, the genetic makeup that you had when you were born can and will change throughout your life, and YOU can direct that makeup with your own thoughts.
UT: Sounds like what I’m try- ing to do with this paper. If I print a bunch of jokes and fun facts and articles by the likes of you, I can positively infl u- ence the genes of thousands of people and create happy people who treat one another well and get good things done. Is that how it works?
CM: Right. As I’ve been saying in my column for years, think well of yourself and notice beauty as often as pos- sible and read Upbeat Times and you will fi nd your life and your relationships improving steadily. Add to this positive attitude the lovely skill of fo-

cusing on what you want, and your genes will program you to see and use opportunities to live happier and be more fulfi lled.
UT: Well that’s pretty intui- tive. So what’s this business about neurogenisis? I thought the neurons you had when you were born was your life allot- ment and that the brain didn’t make new neurons.
CM: The really cool thing about research into the human brain is that every few years we fi nd that many things that we thought were true (in some cases for hundreds of years) are actually wrong. Neu- rogenisis is such a concept. Now we know that the hip- pocampus, the learning center of the brain, can make up to 1400 new neurons a day when a person is learning something new.
UT: So… wait a second. Why is it so diffi cult to learn new stuff if the brain is creat- ing new neurons whenever we bring in new information?
CM: Great question. The answer is simple: when a new neuron is created it takes its place among a bunch of old neurons. And neurons that fi re together, wire together. In oth- er words your old habits (limit- ing beliefs, etc) will quickly teach your new neurons the old tricks. The new neurons must be supported, reifi ed, if real learning is to take place.
UT: How do we do that, reify new neurons?
CM:: Easy, talk about what you have learned, teach someone else. I just learned a powerful lesson about body image. I came home and put up a bunch of post its in my apartment stating again that looks are not important… who I am is important. And I have told about seven people about what I have learned. I’m boosting the power of my new neurons.
UT: Are these the kind of things you’ll be presenting at the Brain Fair in October?
CM: Yes, Paul, we’ll have 40 to 50 booths presenting interactive experiences on everything from Alzheimer’s through brain games, family learning, massage, nutrition and positive attitude to x and y chromosomes, living in the zone and much more. It will be fun for the whole family.
UT: It sounds great, Chance. I’ll mark my calendar for Saturday October 4. Anything else you want to say about it?
CM: Thanks for asking Paul, I’m still seeking a magician, a comedian and a lawyer to have booths. Let me know if you know someone. And thanks so much for this interview. I do get a lot of feedback on my articles in the Upbeat Times. Here’s my e-mail too: Chance Massaro,

Healdsburg, CA. ~ The Na- ture of the Dance: Paintings by Jim Richards. The fi rst in a se- ries of paintings and drawings that expands upon Jim Rich- ard’s more typical portrait and fi gurative work, “The Nature of the Dance” includes works from nature that explore move- ment as expressed in dance. Jim is inspired by the simple beauty seen in life – ranging from simple movement and line, to physical embodiment. Recognizing and recording that representation (as opposed to the idealization) of that natural beauty is his desire and chal- lenge. Showing through Octo- ber 26.
